This assistance document provides a step-by-step guide on setting up Screencastify and using it to record a video. Screencastify is a plugin available via Google Chrome web browser.
What you will need:
· A Google account
· A computer with a webcam and microphone.
· The Google Chrome internet browser.
Installing Google Chrome
Step 1: Click here and select
Step 2: Once you have read the Google Chrome Terms of Service.
Adding Screencastify to Google Chrome
Step 1: Launch Google Chrome
Step 3: If you have not yet signed in, you will see a “Sign In” button in the top-right corner of the Google Chrome browser window.
Step 4: To download the Screencastify extension, you need to navigate to the Screencastify website.
Step 5: Click on “Install Now”
Step 6: In the dialogue box that pops up, select “Add Extension”
Step 7: Once you have clicked “Add extension”, a download will begin. When the download has been completed, Screencastify will be added as a Chrome extension and ready to use. The following pop-up window should display to confirm it has installed successfully.
Step 1: Click on the Screencastify icon on the top right of your browser.
Step 2: You will be directed to a new page prompting you to “choose where to store your recordings”. Select “Google Drive” and then click “GRANT PERMISSION”
Step 3: Once you have clicked the “GRANT PERMISSION” button, you will be asked whether you would like to set up tab recording. Click on “SETUP TAB RECORDING”.
Step 4: A pop-up window will appear; ensure you select “Allow”.
Step 5: Once you have allowed tab recording, you can now click “GET STARTED”.
A short tutorial video will appear. You can close the window once you have watched the video.
Recording your video
Step 1: Click on the Screencastify icon to open the record tab.
Step 2: Make sure that the “Tab” option remains highlighted before you configure your recording settings.
Note: Selecting “Embed webcam” in your record settings will allow your webcam to record you during your presentation. Selecting “Show preview window” will allow you to view your webcam video.
Step 3: Once you have configured your recording settings, click “START RECORDING”
Step 4: Once you are done with your video, click on and then to stop recording.
Step 5: A new browser tab will appear displaying your video to preview.
Saving your video
Step 1: Click on “Untitled Screencast” to rename your recorded video.
Step 2: Click “Share” and then select “Google Drive”.
Step 3: Click on next to “Privacy” and select “Unlisted”.
Sharing your video via Google Drive
Step 1: In your Google Drive account, navigate to the “Screencastify” folder (where your video recording is saved). Right-click the video file and select “get sharable link”.
Step 2: The link to your video will be copied to your clipboard. To protect your privacy, do not change the default sharing setting (Anyone with link can view).
Step 3: Once you paste your link anyone who clicks the link will be able to view your video recording.
Sharing your video via YouTube
Step 1: Click on the share icon and select YouTube.
Step 2: Select Youtube from the menu and then select "unlisted" as the Privacy option.
Step 3: Click on the link shown in the image below to get the shareable link for the video. It will be automatically copied to your clipboard.
